Trauma can exacerbate mental illness, and be a cause of unhealthful sleep. And, people with chronic pain tend to have higher rates of trauma. Individuals experiencing chronic pain, serious mental illness, or trauma may be at risk for health challenges like heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes 鈥 all of which can be caused by sleep disorders and chronic short sleep (). This constellation of factors will be discussed on March 14 from 1pm to 2pm ET in Science of Sleep: The Intersection of Chronic Pain, Serious Mental Illness, and Trauma on Sleep鈥nd What To Do About It.
Part two in a three part series being hosted by SAMHSA鈥檚 Program to Achieve Wellness during National Sleep Awareness Month, this webinar will help providers, families/caregivers, and individuals with lived experience identify some of the conditions that can cause pain and interfere with sleep, and how individuals who experienced trauma can adopt strategies for improving sleep to promote overall health and wellness.
